Part of human nature is to find our way through life through the comfort of routines. We get up the same time of day, travel the same route to work and do the same routine when we go to the gym. But how do you know if it's a routine has become a rut?
Don't get me wrong, routines can be great sources of comfort - especially in times of stress. But you're in a rut if your routine is getting in the way of moving forward or progress in your life.
A prime example is exercise. Remember how hard it was the first time you learned a new sport or first started lifting weights? It was because the activity was new to your muscles! But as time passes and our bodies adjust and become used to the activity - and it becomes easier! Sounds great, doesn't it. But it really isn't. In exercise, when it becomes easier, then you burn less calories doing the same activities.
What can you do? At the gym, you should vary your routines. If you normally run on a treadmill, then try a step class. If you always go to the Tuesday yoga class, try the one on Thursday with a different teacher.
But what about in other areas of your life? What if you are in a rut in what you eat, or how you spend your Friday nights? Challenge yourself to change something! Order a garden salad instead of a Caesar salad. Try a cafe mocha instead of a latte. Take a different route to work - or try that new bistro on 2nd street.
Remember, you can always go back to your routines, but spice up your life occasionally by making a change...
