Gossamer Threads

When it comes to putting the philosophy of my life into the written word, I see a complex mix of words and emotions floating through my brain. I honestly believe that life is a mix of opportunities taken and opportunities missed. I believe that timing of events in our lives is critical to our personal development. Love and laughter, as well as tears and anger, are necessary. And combined in with concepts such as chance and karma, there is a teeny mix of “meant to be".

I can count out a dozen names of people that I feel to my bones I was meant to know. No matter how long or fleeting the relationship might be, I know that some people are simply gossamer threads in my life…and these threads were meant to be a part of my ever evolving life.

Gossamer is both delicate – and strong. Relationships with some people are incredibly strong despite a delicate situation – and sometimes extremely delicate in the best situations. And like a spider’s web, sometimes, these gossamer threads float in – and out – of our lives without warning…

The people that are the gossamer threads in my life are those who bring something to me that is life altering is some way. These meant to know people come to teach us lessons - and sometimes cause us pain. But the pain is worth the lesson – and the growth we get from it. Some people allow us to explore another facet of our lives. Other gossamer threads provide brief and stormy relationships that teach us about passion and our own ability to love.

For many years, long before I began making a concerted effort to change my life, I’ve felt that there were “meant to be” people as a part of my life. But it’s only recently I’ve been able to recognize how truly blessed my life has been by these gossamer threads. I’m sad when they float out, but I’m ever so thankful for when they float in – time and again…
